We eat lots of rice in Hawaii. There is rice at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And sometimes even for afternoon snack in the form of musubis.

We usually eat white rice. Jasmine rice or Japanese short grain rice is the most common.

To mix things up, we sometimes cook brown rice or hapa rice (a 50/50 mix of white rice and brown rice).

If you visit The Rice Factory, you can specify the percentage of rice polishing/milling you want. 0% polishing is brown rice.

100% polishing is white rice. Pick a number in the middle like 25%, 50%, or 75% for a rice that is halfway between white and brown.

The world of rice is endless. Sometimes we mix different grains or beans with the rice (check out Korean markets for this, they have an amazing variety). Sometimes we cook purple or black rice.

And sometimes we make quinoa rice ^_^

Top Tip

Do not use a strainer to wash your rice. You can, but it's extra work and cleaning (and you can never truly get all the rice out of the strainer).

Wash the rice directly in the rice cooker pot. So much more efficient.

FAQ

Rice to quinoa ratio?

We use a 2:1 rice to quinoa ratio. I tested other ratios, but this is the one that everyone likes most. It's still mainly rice, just with lots quinoa speckled in there.

A 1:1 ratio is also tasty, but feels less like you're still eating mainly rice.

I recommend trying the 2:1 ratio first and then feel free to play around and find your preferred ratio.

What rice cooker to use?

Many families in Hawaii have a rice cooker. If you don't already have one, I definitely recommend getting one.

Options range from affordable (I had a $20 one in college) to fancy (including one that plays a melody when the rice is done cooking). There
areseemingly endless options, select one that works for your budget.

My favorite rice cooker brand isZojirushi. They make many different types of rice cookers.

We currently have Zojirushi NP-HCC10XH which is great for a bigger household. We previously had Zojirushi NS-LGC05XB. I love them both. Plus they look nice on the countertop.

The rice cooker is by far our most used kitchen appliance ^_^

What type of quinoa to use?

You can use any kind of quinoa! I used red quinoa because it was on sale at the market. This would be equally great with white quinoa or tri-color quinoa. Though I really like that pop of red against the jasmine rice.
